May 16 dispatches report Paris seeking authority to prosecute Paul de Cassagnac for an article, bank failures in Amsterdam and London connections, a large fire in Farmersville Louisiana, French cabinet reshuffles, German tariff votes, a new French foreign minister, British fishing vessel captures, Russian demands on traders at Shikho, and a major fire destroying much of Lublin City in Russian Poland.

A House committee report by Frye proposes a standing committee to handle all bills on liquor traffic with debate marked by party lines. Reagan Wood Blount Knott opposed. Provo Utah May 16 1879 a detailed report on the execution of Wilkerson at the county jail. The condemned man was strapped to a chair in the jail yard and shot by a concealed firing squad. Three bullets missed heart and lungs but caused his death after twenty seven minutes of agony. Relatives reporters officials and others witnessed the scene. The prisoner spoke of his past life and expressed no hard feelings toward the officers involved.
A local incident reports a book agent knocked down by a street car. two wheels passed over his cheek and the car remains Tail up pending repair. The tale includes a cruel clock pun and a townsman’s prank that backfired as a roading undertaler mystery.
