Huntsville Utah Settlement: Growth Through 1860s
Huntsville in Weber County Utah was settled in 1860 by Captain Jefferson Hunt and about fifty others. The valley features a 36 square mile area, elevation 666 feet above Great Salt Lake, population 1,200 with Eden precinct home to 300. Winter snows average three feet, summers mild. Notable developments include irrigation canals extending 24 miles, a new brick rock schoolhouse, a public square, and a Gothic style meeting house nearing completion at an estimated $8,000.

Reorganization and Growth in Huntsville Ward Weber Stake
In 1877 the Huntsville Ward of Weber Stake was reorganized with Francis A. Hammond ordained bishop and William Ualls Neils C. Mortengen named counselors. The settlement, about 900 people and largely Scandinavian, reports 286 school pupils ages 8 to 18, a 200-volume library, and active church groups. Agricultural output includes 11 tons of hay and crops, 50 000 pounds of butter, 10 000 pounds of cheese, plus several mills and shops.
