In New York a man named John Dick was dragged by a freight train after becoming entangled by a bell rope trailing behind. He was severely mangled and dragged several blocks near 138th Street on the Hudson river railroad line.
The eminent French naturalist Paul Gervais has died. A national conference of colored citizens is scheduled in Nashville on May 6 to discuss the situation of colored people in the South.
