East West tensions rise as Russian planes wheel US and British air corridors above Berlin. Officials protest the seizure of German policemen and assert Washington will resist attempts to disrupt aid to the blockaded city.
Four Idlowans injured in a two vehicle crash near Maynard on Tuesday night. John T Buckman, 23, sustained back injuries. Rob Ye, with a dislocated elbow and fractured right clavicle. Beverly Clancy, 18, of Lans ing, suffered a severe head injury. The car slid down a bank and rolled over landing upright. Verdon and Buckman remained inside as three others were thrown clear. Damage to the auto was extensive. charges may be filed.
The city council briefly studied ordinances tightening sewage and wiring requirements and requiring city engineer inspections. After further study proposals will go to the plan commission to be finalized before passage. The ordinances would affect new buildings and remodeling.
The note to the Soviet ambassador by Secretary of State George Marshall urged new Soviet proposals for a foreign ministers meeting. Britain agreed to the Soviet proposal, France has not yet answered, and Marshall suggested informally that the Big Four might inform the UN secretary general of failure to reach agreement if no new ideas emerged. Russia proposed a pre Paris ministers meeting to settle the Italian colony issue, but initial Western reaction was negative before they softened to consider the suggestion.
Fayette and three neighboring counties Buchanan Clayton and Bremer surpassed their quotas in the 1948 Iowa cancer drive led by E B Shawn and Walter G Voecks. Iowa overall exceeded its goal and Wayne county led with 3024 percent. state funds support research education and service with millions allocated for grants but demand outstrips supply.

Railroad unions opened wage negotiations in Chicago seeking a third round raise and a 40-hour week, replacing the current 48 hours. The non operating unions claim 1,000,000 members and represent shop, maintenance and clerical staff not directly operating trains. Leaders note average hourly wages around $1.17, with higher comparisons from other industries.
Cedar Falls Iowa State Teachers College will open the fall quarter Friday morning with the first classes and the matriculation convocation. Dr Vernon P Bodein director of religious activities, will speak on Great Expectations at the all college assembly. Convocation is at 9 30 p m in the men's gymnasium. Registration for new students continues with upperclassmen reporting Thursday. Freshmen will take placement tests Thursday.
Gov Thomas E Dewey plans a two day earlier start to his second bid with a Sept 20 speech from Drake Stadium Des Moines on CBS radio. He leaves Albany Sept 19 for Des Moines and a western tour through California with running mate Warren. Stassen attacks Truman’s policies while defending Taft Hartley and Dewey’s labor record.
Mrs F G Binning ran a three day classified ad for a two room unfurnished apartment for rent. Phone 1554-3. She says the ad produced results quickly and encourages others to use Registry’s classified ads to sell buy rent or trade items at a small cost.
In Prague thousands gathered as Eduard Benes, former Czechoslovak president, was honored at a state funeral under armed guard. Police and communist workers maintained order while bells tolled and a funeral march played. Prime Minister Zapotocky cautioned against reactionary elements amid two earlier demonstrations.

Funeral services for Mrs Berthane Russell of Fort Des Moines and Mrs Richard J Smid of Cicero will be held Thursday morning in Berwyn Illinois. Police say the estranged husband killed the two women in their Cicero home Saturday before killing himself. A daughter of Mrs Russell is en route from Brazil to attend services which may be delayed for her arrival.
Kermit Roosevelt, aged 20, daughter of the late president’s family, married Alexander Barmine in a private ceremony at Northport Long Island. Surrogate Richard W Hawkins performed the double ring union at a Rotary luncheon and the news was confirmed by the couple's parents Archibald and Mrs Roosevelt. The ceremony time and place remained undisclosed due to Mrs Roosevelt illness.
Randalia special from the local desk reports misfortune at the home of the Register's Randalia correspondent. While doing Monday morning washing, Mrs Rasmussen caught her right hand in the wringer machine. a bone in the middle finger was cracked and six stitches were needed to close the wound.
A capacity Grand theater crowd saw Connors Inc present fur and cloth coats in the season’s colors. Models Kaye Eikenberry and others showcased Kessler fur company styles including Russian sable, caracul lamb, mink, silver fox, muskrat, and beaver. Styling featured large fur sleeves, light cuffs, squared collars, and coats up to 46 inches.
Reports from Cartagena indicate 50 died when the Honduran motorship Euzkerra sank in the Caribbean on September 1. The Caribe rescued nine passengers and eight crewmen from a lifeboat about 120 miles from Cartagena. Survivors said the vessel overturned and went down around 2 a.m. a week ago, leaving only time for lifeboat launches.
