North High Invitational Wrestle Meet Set for December 2

The ith annual North High Invitational brings nine mat teams to West Union on December 2 1972 with two sessions at 12 and 630 pm. Decorah defends team title and features two defending champs George Loomis 119 and Arlyn Moe 726. Lowell Ewart returns as 98 champ. Defending state champions from last year include four finalists. two returnees Jack Fliehler and Larry Berman not defending the invitational title.

Valley edges Fayette in tight 42 39 upset

In the Upper Iowa Conference inaugural girls games West Central and MFL easily defeated foes while Valley struggled but edged Fayette 42 39. Valley, Fayette, West Central, MFL, North and Elkader staged opening night results with later schedules noted. North and Elkader were not scheduled for those games.

Grieserts 31 lead Fredericksburg win over Riceville

Fredericksburg tuned up for Cedar Wapsie race with a 61 to 26 victory over Riceville. Sharon Griesert scored 31 points and Sharon Means added 16 as the Lady Falcons led 39 to 12 at halftime. Fredericksburg JV also won 48 to 24.

Tripoli Girls Triumph as Fink Scores 41 in Close Win

STARMONT Tripoli edged Starmont 53-51 in a Tuesday girls contest as senior Ann Fink poured in 41 points to rally the visitors from a halftime deficit. Starmont claimed thejunior varsity 43-23. Randy Sheffert added 30 for the losers.

Central Rout Dunkerton In First-Ever Meeting 79-34

Central of Waterloo overwhelmed Dunkerton 79 to 34 in its historic first game. Foster led with 18 points while four Central players reached double figures. Dunkerton trailed 40-16 at halftime as Thompson topped the Raiders with 9 points.

Northeast Iowa coaches pick Decorah top Oelwein sixth

NEIC coaches vote Decorah to first and Oelwein to seventh, with Waverly second, Waukon and New Hampton tied for third, Charles City fifth and Cresco seventh. Decorah returns most of its 20-4 season lineup led by Jones and Evans, while Oelwein rebuilds after heavy losses and adds Bill Rosenstiel from Sacred Heart.

Elkader Dominates Open, Eyes 40th Straight League Win

Elkader roared to a 69 33 halftime lead at home and cruised to a 97 80 victory over North as four players hit double figures led by Dave Kuehl 26 and Lyle Bushkofsky 25. Sumner edged West Central 74 59 behind Greg Teeling 22 in his first varsity game. Postville fell to Monona 80 79 in overtime with Mark Wold scoring 22. Valley beat Fayette 61 50.

Garnavillo sweeps pair in basketball night wins

Garnavillo topped Mur-Mac 71-31 in girls action as Vicki Decker scored 27 and Lindenberg 21 helping to build a 30-4 halftime lead. In the nightcap the Garnavillo boys defeated Mar-Mac 49-42, with Christensen scoring 23 to pace the winners.

Manchester Oelwein Huskies stunned taller West Delaware 53 to 39 as coach Bob Downs fielded a pressing defense and a full 32 minute zone. Tim Thomas led with 12 points while Tim Foster and Paul Lechienberg added 13 and 12 for Manchester. Oelwein’s accuracy doomed them with 23 percent shooting and 9 of 20 free throws.

Denver romps past Bosco in 65 42 rout

Denver beat Don Bosco of Gilbertville 65 to 42 Tuesday night as four players reached double figures led by Dan Bartels with 19 points and Steve Wooldick adding 17. Denver also won the reserve game 45 to 28.
