Bench repeats MVP honor in stunning NL season

Cincinnati's Johnny Bench, 24, repeated as National League Most Valuable Player after a breakout 1972 season with 125 RBIs and a .270 average. He led NL with 40 homers during a late May surge as the Reds won the pennant, with Billy Williams second and Willie Stargell third in the voting. Carlton, the Cy Young winner, ranked fifth. Bench joins Roy Campanella and two other catchers as NL MVP repeaters. Iowa prepares for Michigan after a 16-14 loss to Wisconsin.

Jam Boree of Champions features Cedar Rapids area contenders

The 1972 Jam boree of Champions at North Linn on Friday November 10 will showcase last year's state consolation winner as the featured team. Calamus and Monticello begin at 6:30 followed by Fayette versus Maquoketa Valley at 7:15 and West Central versus Center Point at 8. The final pairing is Anamosa against North Linn. Admission is $1.25 for adults and 75 cents for students.

Lachemann Named Manager For Burlington Bees

Rene Lachemann, 27, named manager for Burlington Iowa in the Midwest League Bees organization. Former catcher first baseman for Toledo Oaks in the American Association with a .216 average, 11 home runs, and 36 RBIs last season.

Oclwein Basketball League expands to 14 teams

The final meeting of the Oclwein Basketball League produced a record 14 clubs for Sunday play starting November 19 at 4 p.m. In split conferences seven teams join the National Basketball League and seven form the American Basketball League with playoffs and an All Star game planned. League director Hap Wyver berg urged teams to submit a $10 entry fee to cover gym use lights showers and officials before November 12.

Colorado Rejects Olympic Games

In Colorado voters rejected state funding for the 1976 Winter Games, with 343,832 ballots against and 232,159 in favor as precincts reported. Governor Love said funds would not be forced on the state, while opponents led by Citizens for Colorado's Future hailed the result citing cost and growth concerns.
