Banquet Honors West Central Gridders in Oelwein

A buffet style banquet honoring the West Central football team will be held at the Sportsmen's Supper Club in Oelwein on November 14 at 7 30 p m. Guest speaker is Ron Schipper Central College head coach. Reservations are 2 75 per person. Send reservations and remittances to Dennis Leath by Saturday November 11.

North girls take third at state in 1.5 mile race

Robin Evans of Manilla won the 1.5 mile event in 8 34.8 as Manilla rolled to victory with 49 points in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union meet held in Adel. An Kimm of Norway was second in 9:20 with Barb Brown of Adel close behind. Sixty plus competitors filled a 20 team field as Manilla dominated the scoring.

Northwestern and Buena Vista vie for undefeated season

Nationally sixth rated Northwestern routed Southwest Minnesota 53-14 to finish 9-0. Fourth ranked William Penn beat Central 28-14 and can stay unbeaten by defeating Buena Vista 6-2. William Penn seeks its first outright conference title since joining the Jews Conference, with a potential postseason bid on the line if they beat Buena Vista. Trapping permits are required on state lands and are available freely in several counties from the Iowa Conservation Commission.

Bright future for Wayne Saur at Iowa

Wayne Saur a sophomore at the University of Iowa finished 56th in the 58th Big Ten Cross Country meet in Iowa City. He holds Oelwein mile and two mile records and earlier ran cross country then football as a quarterback. Iowa placed fifth. Indiana won the meet with 147 runners in attendance around 400 spectators. Wayne was the first Oelwein athlete to letter at a large university since Rob Fick.

Buena Vista edges Upper Iowa 17 14 as DV Dolan returns kickoff 91 yards for opening score. Upper Iowa led 14-10 late before BV drove 91 yards for the winning touchdown with 1:14 left. Borst, Black, Harris and Bartemeyer starred on defense. Meggers connected on a late scoring pass to Frey.

Oklahoma State claimed the Big Eight cross country championship at Missouri on a windy day, scoring 37 points to outpace Missouri on the golf course. The Cowboys, favored to win, led throughout the 40th running of the meet.
