Oelwein and Postville clash in the opening sub-state round as the Huskies seek a stiff test. Postville holds a 22-win season under Coach Babcock, while Oelwein seeks revenge after a close loss to the Chicks and a prior win at home.
Local drive for funds to meet a $4500 goal continues in South Fayette County with city solicitations due soon despite bad roads hampering rural workers. Dale Tripp Uchwein was fined 500 dollars and costs in Judge W H Antes court at West Union on a charge of lascivious acts with a child. Earlier a charge of rape or assault with intent to rape was dismissed for insufficient evidence. Jury members named included Verne Schucht Adolph Komrofske and others from Westgate Clermont Hawkeye and Fayette. Testimony concluded as attorneys Brien and O Brien asked for a directed verdict.
Preston Tucker, Chicago automobile manufacturer, declared he will produce 20 to 30 Tucker 48 cars an hour by mid-summer. He demonstrated the first assembly line model at the annual stockholders meeting and noted production could proceed even without a government owned steel plant in Cleveland, for which he has placed a bid.
LOS ANGELES. Beulah Louise Overell, 18 year old heiress to a half million dollars, pleads guilty to failing to pay a hit run driving fine. She claims she is broke, must pay by tomorrow or face 10 days in jail. Earlier she avoided a minor collision after being acquitted of murdering her parents.
Albert Wilson, 32, of Moline Illinois, a former Oelwein resident, is in critical condition after a head on crash between Moline and Monmouth. He suffered multiple fractures, 100 stitches to his face, and his wife is Gwendolyn Jardee of Oelwein. The other two drivers died in the collision.
S/Sgt Melvin Holden, 22, the first Clayton county war death to be returned from overseas, will be honored in Elkader with a Thursday arrival, Friday services at 2 p.m. at Witt Funeral Chapel, and a military ceremony at East Side cemetery attended by local VFW and American Legion members. Holden, born March 3, 1922, enlisted May 28, 1940, died February 9, 1945, while serving as a mess sergeant at an amphibious training center in Hawaii. He is survived by his wife in Austin, and six sisters and two brothers.
Washington report on Senate GOP leaders Taft and Vandenberg clashing over Europe recovery spending. Taft backs cutting first year funding from 53 billion to about 4 billion. Vandenberg prefers speed with unchanged 53 billion. Also notes tax proposal from business group, Snyder on IRS efficiency, deferral of anti-poll tax bill, and Chennault urging 2 billion in aid to China.
Iowa farmers paid one third of the state's individual income tax in 1947, with 108,113 farmers contributing $3,150,944. The total from 397,082 filers was $9,863,566, about $25 per person. Physicians led per-capita payments at $277,547 across 1,967 filers.
Two Fort Sheridan military policemen brought Robert Bud Streit of Oelwein back to camp after a month AWOL. Streit was jailed in Union County on a false drawing and uttering a check charge. Two other men Themis Tollison and James Yach remain jailed awaiting MPs from Fort Creek Nebraska.
Army Secretary Kenneth C. Royall issued a directive on November 19 1947 asking all officers and personnel writing on military matters to avoid calling the Soviet Union a potential enemy or threat. Robert C Deyo of Long Beach California formerly of Oelwein is profiled as Candidate of the Week in a Fort Riley personnel newspaper. He has completed five months of the six month officer candidate course at the ground forces school and holds four U S Army battle stars from service in Africa Italy and the China Burma India theater. He attended Northwestern University and the University of Iowa before enlisting in 1942 with earlier service in the British Army.
Des Moines reports the state tax commission provided fieldmen lists of persons holding federal liquor stamps and paying slot taxes to check exemption claims. Taverns are excluded as not entitled to exemptions. Exemption denied to properties hosting liquor permits or slot machines. removal later may restore eligibility.
Funeral services for Laura Jacobs 72 will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Berg chapel Summer. The Rev W Dimmitch will officiate and burial will be in Union Mount cemetery near Summer. Jacobs died Tuesday at her son’s home after a siro she suffered two weeks ago. She was born June 29 in Sumner township and lived in or near Summer. She married Morris Jacobs May 26, 1899. Survived by her son, a daughter Mrs Kenneth Webber of Burbank Calif eight grandchildren, one great grandson, and brothers Charles and Lee Aldrich of Ocुम.
Judge William B nitler sentenced Charles Ver Helst, 19, to 20 years in the state penitentiary for the strangling death of his 16 year old high school sweetheart Arlene Mott. Autopsy showed she was pregnant. Ver Helst blamed an unknown person. defense planning appeal to the state supreme court.
A public meeting in Westgate Opera house led to the formation of the Community Fire Protection Association. Officers elected include President Louis Kane and Secretary-Treasurer Frederick Rueben, with directors Clarence Phillips Werner Thran Robert Rueber and Walter Buhr. Farmers plan to buy the fire truck and 28 signed up. The town will maintain and insure the truck and house it, though council opposition cites the small current fire house and a new one may be needed.
Eight veteran leaders announced a group named Veterans Against MacArthur to oppose Gen Douglas MacArthur for president. Spokesman Paul Berger said about 300 veterans had pledged support, citing concerns over MacArthur’s aloofness, 1932 Washington march violence, press censorship in Japan, and anti democratic leanings. In Oshkosh Rainbow Division WWI veterans backed MacArthur 100 percent in a letter from Gust Hafeman, challenging rumors of GI opposition and asserting unwavering support.

Governor Thomas E Dewey of New York defeated Harold E Stassen 6 to 2 in New Hampshire's preferential primary as about 47 000 votes were tallied. Dewey secured six delegates including three large and three district delegates with Dewey favored across city and country precincts. Democrats chose contention delegates pledged to Truman. Dewey plans further primaries in Wisconsin and Oregon as decisive tests for pre conference campaign.
Mrs. Fredericka Langston sister of John Jarchow of Ochwein died last night at Fayette county home. Services by Rev Wilbur Becker will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Hutz Funeral home. Burial in Oakdale. Born Bremer county October 2 1883 to William and Mrs Jarchow. Survived by son Rolland Langston of Waterloo sister Minnie Wenthe of Sumner brother William Jardow of Fitzgerald Ga and a granddaughter.
Brockton Massachusetts reports a 132 pound store owner, Narry Thi beault, who has repeatedly routed bandits timing to hold up his shop, six incidents in 13 years.
Des Moines reports the Iowa State Education Association urged a 12 percent raise for teachers. Its research division found a 6 percent cost increase from March 1947 to January 1, 1948, and projects another 6 percent rise by July 1948, arguing for higher salaries to cover living costs.
