A severe storm Tuesday night in Oelwein saw a lightning strike near the William Reisner residence on Fifth Ave. NW at 11:48 p.m. A secondary powerline threat was contained with no damage. Earlier, an oil slick fire on Otter Creek near anti pollution activity was reported at 10:52 p.m. causing only minor damage.
Ralph Reed 72 a retired mail carrier and lifelong Buchanan County resident died Tuesday at Scholtz Hospital Waterloo Funeral services set for 1:30 pm Friday at White Funeral Home with burial in Fremont Township Cemetery near Aurora Survivors include wife Marguerite three daughters Mrs Kenneth Peck Winthrop Mrs Dean Cochran St Paul and Mrs Douglas Shadwick Granada Hills Cal one brother and five grandchildren
James F. Ingels, 88, died June 26 in San Diego California. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 pm at United Presbyterian Church Maynard with burial in Long Grove Cemetery. Visitation at Delsing Wright Funeral Home Maynard. Survivors include son John Ingels and family, Howard Ingels, Marvin Ingels all of Maynard, daughters Annabelle Helsinstine of Champaign and Ruth Roorda of Carendon Hills, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Independence special meeting results in LaVonne Solberg of Rowley hired as education secretary to replace Richard Garber at a $7,500 yearly salary. Solberg, previously secretary to the superintendent, will be officially appointed July 10. Garber resigned earlier this month. The board also awarded Hoffman Bros. Inc. a paving contract for the West Elementary drive at about 110 feet for $2,818.07.
