Tragedy mars bomb practice aboard USS Mt McKinley
A ground crewman died after walking into a propeller during the final dress rehearsal for the atomic bomb test aboard the USS Mt McKinley off Bikini Atoll. Weather was poor, two Kwajalein planes failed to reach the target, yet the exercise proceeded with the dummy bomb dropped between the battleship Nevada and the carrier Independence. The Queen day test, ordered by Vice Admiral Blandy, simulated conditions for the upcoming real bomb drop and evacuation of ships, leaving 75 guinea pig vessels to endure the first air dropped test on July 1 with a shallow underwater detonation planned weeks later.
