Visitors enjoy Centennial festivities in Oelwein with celebrations, TV coverage, and souvenir sales. Residents speculate on local attire and bearded looks for upcoming events while community members highlight teachers, alumni, and local stories of pride.
Mr and Mrs Duane Hanson are celebrating 25 years of marriage on June 22 1948 in Independence. They have three daughters Sandra Diane and Sharon and a grandson Brett. Mrs Hanson is from Independence and works at KOEL radio. Mr Hanson is with Oelwein Federal Savings and Loan. They belong to Grace United Methodist Church.
Foursome ladies met Wednesday for luncheon and golf with Mrs. Robert Berry as chair. Prizes went to Mrs. Richard Petrik and Mrs. Mike Mahoney. Tee-off next Wednesday at 1 15 p.m. with Mrs. Dale Rosenstiel chairing.
East Country club members planned a July 29 picnic at Osborne Park after a June 20 meeting at Mrs. Paul Bockensted’s home with Mrs. Howard Hansel as guest and Mrs. Robert Larson receiving a secret pal gift. Next meeting with Mrs. Jack Corell. card party set for Saturday. Royal Neighbors of America met at Mrs. Duane Schroeder’s home Tuesday. July 17 meeting with Mrs. Lanse Scully to audit books.
The Pastime Embroidery club met with Mrs Gladys Gleim. Nine members and one guest Celia Andreae attended. They voted to give 5 to the Arlington Businessmen's club and 3 to the Red Cross. No July meeting. Aug 7 at Theodosia Klein sorge's home. Fruit Cocktail Relish recipe: drained fruit cocktail chopped tomato minced onion and Florida celery combined to serve with roasts or barbecue meats.
Calendar notices remind clubs to submit reports by 9 30 a m daily and 9 a m Saturday. Entries include Jefferson Rebekah lodge IOOF hall 8 p m June 22 and various meetings June 25 26 27 at churches clubs and parks with hostesses chairmen and potluck details.
Beta Sigma Phi members buried the Project 2600 time capsule on city hall lawn to honor a centennial effort begun in April. Xi Alpha Omega and Delta Xi chapters collected mementos from Oelwein residents and local businesses for a 2000 burial, with Mayor Louis Hull reading a proclamation and directions for disbursement.
