A study by The Highway Safety Foundation and Arthur Godfrey analyzes 60 000 passenger tires, including 14 000 from crash-involved cars, finding most have less than 2 32 inch tread and that wet-road crashes favor vehicles with tread at 2 32 inches or less. The report urges tougher enforcement and a 4 32 inch safe minimum.
State Hygienic Laboratory reports three wells along Iowa’s portion of Inter State 80 showing unsafe coliform bacteria. Nitrates in two of 84 wells pose infant formula risks. locations not disclosed. Survey covered 17 state rest areas, 36 service stations, three camp grounds, 22 motels.
ANES reports southern corn leaf blight has moved into six additional Iowa counties, bringing total infested counties to 16. Tama Black Hawk Hardin Pare Hamilton and Carroll identified as new infested areas. Entomologist Harold Gunderson notes corn borers high in southeast Iowa, with army worm activity in western Iowa corn fields.

The Scott Hot Shots 4 H Club conducted its project tour on Monday June 14 visiting garden beef and dairy projects with a noon family picnic at Arlington Park and a post lunch softball practice and final stop at Seve Faick’s garden project.
The Secret Service reports half of the nation's counterfeit seizures in seven months occurred in Los Angeles. About 52.5 million in bogus bills have been seized locally since December 1, boosting total confiscations to around 10 million. A 2.5 million batch of uncut $20 sheets was found in a car and a residence.
Army Specialist Four Larry J. De Paepe, 21, son of Mr and Mrs Frank J De Paeepe of Independence Route 4, was promoted while serving with the 23rd Infantry Division near Chu Lai Vietnam.
