The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that neither the Constitution nor federal law requires states to pay for abortions when mothers are not in danger. Connecticut and Pennsylvania decisions were upheld or reversed. states may fund such welfare payments if they choose. Justice Powell led the majority with dissents by Marshall Brennan and Blackmun.

Driver in hospital after bridge abutment crash west of Oelwein
An Oelwein man Robert Smith age 40 is hospitalized in Cedar Rapids after a Saturday afternoon one car crash on the airport road west of Oelwein. A left rear tread loss caused loss of control and a collision with a concrete bridge abutment. Damages to the car and bridge were extensive. Smith suffered a concussion lacerations and fractures and is in fair condition in the ICU. He faces charges of failure to have control and others pending. Fire Chief Wallace Rundle urged spectators to stay away from crash scenes to allow emergency crews access.

Two young Cedar Rapids residents Mark Kabelitz 17 and Joyce Foster 14 died when a single engine plane crashed in a farm field near Squaw Creek School after allegedly buzzing a party. FAA and NTSB probe found witnesses saying the aircraft dropped small flour sacks during the passes.
