Funeral Friday for Sumner Man Carl Schumacher
Funeral services for Carl Schumacher 77 will be held Friday at 1 p m at St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed church Sumer with Rev Paul Kehle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He died Monday night at his daughter Mrs Elmer Corte home after three weeks illness. Born April 13 1871 in Hanover Germany he came to the United States in 1886 living briefly in Baltimore then near Waverly and later farming near Sumner. Survived by five daughters Bertha Zell Freda Schroeder Dora Eick Hilda Corte and Marie Corte two sons August and Martin all of Sumner 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Driver Killed As Car Hits Bus In Merrill Iowa
Nine bus passengers remained in Sioux City hospitals with injuries after a collision last night between a bus and a car in Merrill Iowa. Duane Kenney aged 26 from Fresno California was killed as the car’s sole occupant. Iowans Killed In Kansas Plane Crash
Four Des Moines men died when their plane a Cessna 170 crashed in a wheat field four miles south of St Marys Kansas during a severe storm. Victims identified as Warren H Ridgley Jr Roy Clifton Richard McDole and Russell C Churchman Sr all residents of Des Moines. The crash occurred around 8 25 am CST in Hessler Island a 700 acre area near the Kaw River. Kansas National Guard Captain Everett Hart said the wing likely came off in flight during the storm.

Local Soldier Retires After 39 Years Service
Beri D Grummitt, 39, son of John Grummitt of Oelwein, retires after 13 years and six months in uniform. Enlisted in the medical corps at San Antonio in 1927, he served in China, the Philippines, and the CBI theater. He rose from private to captain, earned master sergeant in 1942, and gold bars in 1942. He leaves Weaver AFB for March AFB to discharge and reenlist as master sergeant for retirement, planning to farm an orange grove in California. He was born and raised in Oelwein and attended local schools.
