Prague reports confirm President Eduard Benes has resigned amid illness, clearing the way for a communist succession in Czechoslovakia. Parliament elected eight days earlier is expected to choose his successor, with premier Klement Gottwald a likely candidate and Zdenek Notedly as another possible choice. Benes, 64, had restricted mobility and spent time at his Sezimova Usti summer home since the February coup.

Independence special report says prayer service was held at Peoples Funeral Home for Hannah Retland 73 who died Friday at her brother Henry Schmidkonz’s home. Lutheran church services followed at 2 with burial in Wilson cemetery. Born December 6 1874 in Germany she came to America at 14. She married Enoch Retland in August 1930. Survived by brother Henry sister Mary Independence and sister Barbara Johnson Council Bluffs. Preceded in death by husband and two brothers.
Sewer Cleaning Equipment Chosen for City Use
City tests of sewer cleaning equipment show it works well. City clerk Clean Spoo said tests satisfied councilmen, who tentatively approved ordering the equipment several weeks ago to reduce basement flooding.

Iowa Farmer Drowns In Cedar River Swim
Donald J. Christensen, 22, a farmer living near Charles City, drowned while swimming the Cedar River with Monte Barrett, 18. Barrett attempted a rescue but was pulled under. he was revived, and Christensen's body was recovered about an hour later.

Workers Rehired As Wilson Strike Ends
Wilson officials say the company is rehiring most workers who returned to work ending the nationwide meat strike that began March 16. James D. Cooney, Wilson vice president, says seven Wilson plants presented workers with a return-to-work offer and they were rehired. The CIO United Packinghouse Workers announced a settlement claiming the strike was settled days ago as far as they were concerned. More than 46,000 Shriners swarm Atlantic City for their annual convention with two large parades and a boardwalk Mardi Gras featuring 28 bands from temples in 28 states.

Drivers Hurt in Midget Races at West Union
Two midget auto drivers were injured during the Sunday final at the West Union dirt track. Earl Finley of Blue Rock III sustained serious chest injuries and was transferred from West Union Community Hospital to University Hospital Iowa City. Carl Richter of Waterloo expected to be released soon.

Simpson Charged With Taking Car From Local News Desk
Danny Simpson of Oelwein faced charges in justice court for operating a vehicle without the owner's consent. He did not post $2500 bond and was jailed in West Union. A $10 fine for driving without a license was issued. Police say Simpson borrowed Paul Weishaps' car Friday and returned it Sunday.

Nash Dies Leader In Auto Industry
Charles W. Nash 81 former Buick and General Motors head and founder of his own company died in Beverly Hills California. He helped produce the first Nam car in 1917 and was a pioneer of the automotive industry.
