Optimism Maintains U S Economy Despite Indicators

Washington AP reports the Carter administration remains optimistic about growth despite a June drop in the Commerce index of leading indicators. Blumenthal cautions against month to month conclusions while Granum says the dollar decline reflects other currencies’ gains. Farmers’ prices fell 2 percent for the month, and overall farm prices are down 7 percent for the year. Burn, chairman of the Fed, notes slower growth but potential unemployment relief. Productivity fell 1.8 percent in Q2 after a 6.1 percent rise. Four indicators rose led by work week and stock prices.

Fire sweeps toward Corona new subdivision forcing evacuations

A brush fire in Corona California charred over 3600 acres and drove more than 150 people from their homes near a new subdivision. Winds and heat pushed flames close to tract homes though no houses burned. The page reports 400 acres burned Thursday in citrus and avocado groves and declares the fire started from an unattended illegal campfire.

West Union accident injures three. teen hospitalized in Rochester

Pamela Baker a 17 year old Oelwein girl remained in emergency care Saturday at a Rochester hospital after transfer from Palmer Memorial Hospital West Union. William David Bunn 18 listed in stable condition. Both were in a car that struck a parked bean meal truck on South Vine Street West Union. Iowa Supreme Court Upholds Custody Principle In Family Case

The Iowa Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling to keep children with their mother rather than their grandfather, affirming that parents in trouble may place children in the best environment without losing custody. The decision involved Robert Slater and Donnie Day Sams and noted the mother’s need for aid did not relinquish custody.

Vance to Press West Bank Rights on Middle East Trip
