Shetland Ponies Bring Top Prices At Horse Sale

At the Oelwein Livestock Exchange sale on Saturday, top prices hit 150 each for two Shetland ponies bought by West Union and Tonia bidders. Work-horses averaged 59 each for quality stock. A capacity crowd of 158, with about 50 women bidders, attended as 63 of 75 horses offered found buyers. Exchange secretary H C Andreae praised the market as strong for northeastern Iowa.

Pilot of Ghost B-29 Crashes West of Grand Rapids

A B-29 nicknamed Ghost with 11 crew aboard reportedly crashed several hours after the crew parachuted to safety to escape fuel fumes. Second Lt. Memke and others rode out the smoke and attempted rescue as the aircraft went down west of Grand Rapids near Napoleon and Bear Lakes, with some crew injured but others unhurt.

Galen Vargason, student in summer sessions at Cornell College Mount Vernon, was chosen for a lead role in a premier musical staged there earlier this month. The production was directed by a male writer and the show was hired by the pane.

Merry Hearts 4 H Club Demonstrates At Stanley Farm Bureau

The Merry Hearts 4 H Club met Mary Lou Combs on Thursday with 13 members and four new members present. Dorothy Ma gir and Eva May Schlumbohm demonstrated honey nut cake and plain cake. Mary Lou Combs led a sugarless icing exercise and plans were shared for a July 26 meeting with Phillis Porc Rogers. At Buffalo Township Farm Bureau, about 150 attendees gathered at Charles and Mrs Morgan’s home Wednesday. The 4 H girls presented a program and a silver cleaning demonstration by Cheryl and Yvonne Weston, followed by ice cream cake and coffee. Two slide reels were shown.

Midland Opens Des Moines Airport

Des Moines airport opened with a breakfast event and a busy first day. The hangar houses about thirty ships and forty pilots flew in from across the state. Manager Norbie Locke called the opening completely successful and outlined staff including two instructors and two mechanics. The Manufacturing Company leased the field and a restaurant operates on site.

McFadden Rites at Fayette Tuesday

Fred J. McFadden, 45, of Randalia, died after a three week illness. Requiem Mass will be at St Francis church Fayette Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock. Deising Funeral Home of Maynard is in charge. He is survived by his wife and four children, John Kathleen Patricia and Vernon, all at home. Neighbors in Randalia plan to help on his farm and have conducted farm bees to keep up work.

Local man jailed after Nazi salute incident in cafe

Claude L Pryor of St Joseph Missouri is held in the city jail on suspicion after refusing to pay for lunch at the Zozee cafe and saluting Hitler. Officers Woods and King apprehended him as he left an incall cafe. A ration card address 1507 4th Ave St Joseph is cited as a clue to his identity.

Navy Bluejacket Rechkemmer Listed Dead

John B. Rechkemmer, US Navy fireman, is listed as dead after being missing since May 4 aboard the USS Luce. telegrams to his mother Mrs. Dolores M. Rechkemmer in the city said a review shows no hope for survival. He enlisted February 17, 1944, trained at Farragut Idaho, served in the Aleutians briefly, then sea duty in the South Pacific with five major engagements including Leyte Luzon and Saipan. Survived by mother grandmother and siblings Jerome Jean and June.
