Laverne Boeckmann, 22, Sumner, held in Bremer county jail on manslaughter charges after his car struck 73 year old Rupert Bullard near Fort Dodge. Bullard died in a Fort Dodge hospital nine days after the June 8 collision. Sheriff says Boeckmann admitted striking Bullard during an ensuing altercation.

Illinois tavern operators duped by straw tobacco scam
Two Illinois men from Stronghurst and Monmouth reported a consignment fraud in Burlington. Judge M H Kepler awarded Leo P Winks Sumner $2000 plus 5 percent interest from July 3 1944 in a case against Aetna Life Insurance Co Hartford Conn. for a policy on his son Ben Winks killed in action in France June 6 1944. The soldier, employed by Wescott and Winks, was covered by group insurance and the widower claimed notice of military service while premiums were paid but no payment.
