Plane Crash Near Mazeppa Injures Two During Takeoff

A section of Highway 13 south of Elkader was closed at 10 a.m. Tuesday for a two year reconstruction project. Reilly Construction Co. will perform the work under the Iowa DOT. Traffic will detour via Highway 3 west of Edgewood, north on county road X21 through Littleport, then onto X30 Littleport road to rejoin Highway 13 south of Elkader and proceed northeast.

Injuries but no deaths on area roads over holiday
Oelwein area motorists and riders sustained injuries in several Fourth of July weekend crashes as law enforcement handled minor incidents. Across Iowa, 13 deaths reported on highways as the national Fourth of July toll rose, with 531 fatalities since Friday 6 p.m. The Oelwein trio involved in a cycle car crash at the Foursome Golf and Country Club Blacktop required hospital care. Jeffery Reinking 19 and Debra Downs 19 sustained facial injuries and abrasions, while Marty Mataya 19 was treated for minor injuries. A stalled car and a collision with a passing group of cyclists sparked the sequence, with no injuries to Lowell Latham 17 or his companion. The investigation continues. A Lamont youth, Brian Meehan 17, suffered a broken leg returning from Aurora fireworks, after colliding with a car on W-45 near Aurora. Meehan was hospitalized and later transferred for care. A separate one-car crash west of Winthrop on highway 20 involved James Kiefer 16 of Rowley. He reported curved road conditions after meeting another vehicle. Continued on page 10.
