USU women defeat Laras to move to 9 4 record

Fayette The Upper Iowa University women improved their record to 9 4 with a 70 44 victory over Laras here Monday night. Theresa Johnson led the Lady Peacocks with 29 points, Luann Dunn 14, Ann Frasher 10 and Margaret Howard six. The US women travel to Mt Mercy for a game Wednesday night Jan 26 at 7 p.m. and host Ellsworth Junior College at 2 p.m. this Saturday.

No. 1 ISU Falls to Oklahoma In Dual Meet Upset

No. 1 Iowa State suffered its first season dual defeat, 2014, at Oklahoma as the Cowboys, 12-1, upset the Cyclones in Stillwater. Johnny Jones opened a Cyclone lead, but Billy Martin edged Mike Land 9-7, and OSU swept 134 and 142 before Joe Zuspann, Paul Martin, Dave Powell, Eric Wais, and Bob Fouts all fell to Cowboy winners.

Shooting class opens for youths in West Union

The West Union Jaycees restart a shooting education program for boys and girls aged seven to 14. Training chairman Lyon Kelck says sessions run six one hour classes starting Tuesday Jan 25 at 7 p.m. Pending enrollment, location is the Jaycee club room over Avalon Theatre. co sponsored by U S Jaycees and Daisy Rifle Company, the program covers gun handling safety shooting competition and lifelong recreation education.

Kalee and Wolter contend for Cedar Wapsie scoring crown

South Winneshiek star Wayne Kalee trails Denver’s Andy Wolter by .1 point in the Cedar Wapsie Conference scoring chase. Kalee leads with 26.3 per game for 13-1 Warriorettes, Wolter at 26.2 for 12-1 Cyclonettes. Dunkerton Star Weber Leads Cedar Wapsie Conference Scoring

Dunkerton junior center Dave Weber leads the Cedar Wapsie Conference with 22.8 points per game. Kevin Kuhrt of Tripoli is second at 20.7, Pat Miller of Wapsie Valley 20.3, while Kuhrt also tops shooting accuracy at 55.3 percent. Bart Vogel of Jesup leads rebounds at 12.1, with Weber second at 11.6 and Kuhrt third at 11.5. Tripoli leads defense at 50.2 points allowed, Dunkerton tops offensive (65.6), and Jesup owns field goal percentage (46.2).

Iowa Turkey License Applications Now Available

Iowa residents may apply for wild turkey hunting licenses from Jan 28 to Feb 11 at county offices or via the Iowa Conservation Commission. The $10 fee covers one of four zones with three hunting periods in 1977, total licenses set at 1 005, each bearded turkey bag limit.

Oelwein Ninth Graders Shine At Two Tournaments

The Oelwein ninth grade wrestling team placed third at Vinton and fourth at Waverly. Darryl Schmitt 115, Dave Perry 140, and Jamie Pirillo won titles at Vinton. Schmitt and Pirillo won at Waverly. Teammates Tafolla 190, Neh 120, Vargasen 125 also earned podium spots across both meets.
