Bethel School No 8 Damaged by Fire
A fire at Bethel School No 8 seven miles southwest of Hawkeye damaged the roof with a seven foot square hole. Fire departments from Sumner and Hawkeye responded. the blaze was out upon arrival. Sparks caused the roof fire. the school has sixteen pupils taught by Darlene Hyman.

OHS Plans to Revive 41 Giggleteria Carnival
Oelwein High students plan to revive the 1941 Giggleteria carnival providing side shows, dancing and amusements. A planning committee led by Carl Bradshaw, John DeTimmerman, Cate Conner and Gresdna Daly submitted plans to the faculty. The event will feature a floor show and coronation with concessions assigned to various organizations as production begins next week.

Marilyn Kay Schuller, daug hter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Schuller of 505 6th Ave SE, died Tuesday at Mercy hospital after a brief illness. Dr L W Hayter will conduct Friday services at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, with burial in Woodlawn. The body is at the home. Born January 24 1942 in Oelwein she is survived by her parents a sister Barbara two brothers Wayne and Norman maternal grandfather in Oelwein and paternal grandmother Hintz funeral home in charge.

In Independence a lag in renewing car and farm trailer licenses in Buchanan county is reported by treasurer Victor White. Car renewals total 2,391 so far, 109 fewer than the 2,500 by end of December 1946. 1947 licenses total 5,300. Farm trailer licenses total 537, 25 less than last year, with 1,00 of these licenses sold in 1947. White says renewals are behind but expected to rise before month end penalty.

Name Outside Judge For Polk Trials
The Supreme Court appointed Martin Van Qosterhout of Orange City as presiding judge for Polk county fraud conspiracy trials. Six indicted defendants include Supervisor Ben Dewey former Welfare Director H J H Thompson three former supervisors William Cotton Roy J Hild and Charles Parmenter and Clarence E Boner Johnson. Airliner crash near Savannah leaves fifteen dead
A Coastal Airways DC-3 carrying about 25 Puerto Ricans to Miami crashed into a swamp near the Savannah River.
