Fire destroys home on New Year's Day in Oelwein

Fire Chief Wally Rundle estimates at least 20000 for a northwest side residence owned by an elderly woman. The blaze started in the basement amid stored boxes and newspapers after neighbor Wayne Wilson thawed pipes with a torch. Powers was evacuated by her son in law Bill Torsen, and fire crews fought the fire for hours before a second hot spot was extinguished on the attic.

Manning School Board approves hidden tape monitoring

In Manning, the school board voted 3-2 to defend using a hidden tape recorder in a boys only home economics class to curb disturbances by 21 students. Principal Larry Miller authorized the surveillance last December to show the need for disciplinary action, with two students later removed from the class amid privacy concerns. Fayette County Supervisors Elect New Chair and Swear In New Member

The Fayette County Board of Supervisors reorganized and appointed Don Bartels as chair replacing Herb Haas. Carl Wagner was sworn in to replace Carl Oldenburg, who retired. Wagner joined Bartels and Josephine Pirillo on the Social Services committee while Wagner joined the Care Facility Commission. Mary Caldwell will resign as administrator of the Care Facility this spring. Helen Pepin was named director of relief and Bill Moellering county engineer with a salary of 23000 dollars. Further appointments were set for later in the week.

Weather Outlook With Snow Chance Tuesday

Weather forecast shows a good chance of snow Tuesday with highs in the low 20s and a 30 percent chance of measurable snowfall. The extended outlook from Wednesday to Friday calls for snow Wednesday and clear to partly cloudy conditions Thursday and Friday with cold temperatures.
