The Associated Press reports the major league baseball dispute is nearing a settlement after a long national pastime conflict. Marvin Miller, executive director of the MLB Players Association, will brief player reps from 24 teams midweek on the agreement with club owners, signaling an end to the threat of a strike.
UCLA's basketball team, led by John Wooden, earns 36 of 38 first place votes for a 70 point lead over NC State as they crush foes by 23 points per game. Pac-8 teams lag in free throw shooting while preseason baseball notes mention labor terms and Padres fence plans.
Ames is crowned No 1 in the final Associated Press ranking as Iowa’s top high school basketball team, posting a 20-1 record with a 13 game win streak. The Big Eight champs received all 16 first place votes, with only loss to Waterloo East avenged. Marshalltown debuts at No 10 replacing Des Moines Lincoln, while The Railsplitters drop to 12th amid a crowded poll of strong regional teams.
ILAC coaches at Waterloo honor 1973 All Town Conference with three unanimous picks Jim Bushkofsky Dana Snoop and Frank Stewart. Bushkofsky named league MVP after three new conference records. Dan Smith and Dave Porter also named. honorable mention totals include Elkader junior with 476 points in 14 games for a 34.0 average on 188 FGs and 100 FT.
Elkader Central meets Northeast Community of Goose Lake in Clinton Friday at 7 30 for a district final. The winner advances to face Mt. Vernon and then Des Moines. Elkader beat St John s Independence 81 57 to improve to 24 2. Goose Lake beat Bellevue 64 62 at Clinton with Gary Schroeder hitting two late free throws to seal it. Goose Lake stands 16 4. Goose Lake features a 6 0 6 5 front line with four in double figures led by Keith Krogman and Brent Bielenberg. Schroeder averages 12.3 points. In Fayette Monday night Dave Kuehl scored 17 as the Warriors rolled 44 25 at halftime. Alta faces Albert City Truesdale in Storm Lake as Class A district play opens. Mount Vernon 21 0 and Durant, Eldora, Manning, and others are in the state rankings with action spread across Tuesday and Wednesday.
Oelwein and Decorah meet for the District championship at Upper Iowa University on Wednesday at 7:30. Decorah, 20-2, lost to Oelwein 54-41 in their second meeting, while Oelwein, 8-13, aims to avenge last year's upset and secure a title berth.
North of West Union wrestler Lance Franck finished fifth at 98 pounds in Class AA. He defeated Turkey Valley’s Tim Speltz 3 to 2 in the 5th to 6th consolation match at the state tournament.
Jim Ryun begins professional running after amateur rule disputes end. He debuts Saturday in a practice meet of the International Track Association at the Minidome in Pocatello Idaho, competing in the mile.
Seventy-eight teams from Northeast Town competed in the District 3 Team Tournament at Waverly Bowl. Oelwein had 12 teams, sending three to the State Tournament April 7-8 at Plaza Lanes Des Moines. Champions include Bantam Mixed Team with 2444, Junior Mixed 2772, and Senior Young Adult girls 2674.
Waverly-Shell Rock upset No. 5 Mason City 63-59 on Mason City’s home floor as Iowa Class AA district play began. Mason City led late before Waverly Shell Rock hit key free throws, with Dennis Netifee scoring 24 for Mason City and Bob Cousin 19 for the winners. Waverly Shell Rock advances to face Fort Dodge for the district title.
In Oelwein a crowded gym saw Garnaville 20 2 upset West Central, ranked No 3, as fans, officials, and boosters weighed odds. WC held regretful memories of past state runs while Garnaville, strong in the Upper Mississippi Conference, pressed on toward Des Moines amid rumors and local chatter.
