In Czechoslovakia we watched events of 1934 37 with mounting fear and worry. I felt horrified at this spectacle of Europe's collapse. I asked myself where it would end and set out to prevent catastrophe by building up our army. By 1938 our army was strong and well trained, yet we faced Munich alone. We sought alliance with the Soviet Union, tripling efforts to deter Nazi aggression, but Western powers refused decisive support. The Munich pact of September 1938 clubbed our state and people, sealing our fate despite mobilization.

Seven Children Die in Iowa Farm Fire tragedy
Seven Waterhouse children aged 16 to 18 months burned to death in a Prairie Grove farm home 14 miles north of Burlington Iowa. The fire, started by an overheating wood and coal stove on the first floor, trapped the children in an upstairs room as parents escaped in their night clothes. Neighbors learned of the blaze only after an ice storm cut telephone service. The Waterhouse family, longtime Danish settlers, lived in the ramshackle farm with no modern conveniences and carried water from a creek.
