In Wichita Kansas Drake drops to 7-14 after a second half drought. Wichita State beats Drake 95-71 in the Missouri Valley clash as Drake sinks to 2-9 in the Valley and 7-14 overall. Coach Howard Stacey laments the cold stretch that doomed their comeback.
In Registerland coaches and officials are reminded ballots are due back by February 27. Past records show late returns cannot be counted in Des Moines. Cooperation is needed from those who received ballots to fill and return them in the self addressed envelopes for fair statewide recognition.
Rich Holm reports that Oelwein Huskies seek a NEIC basketball title share by beating Waverly on Thursday to become only the second two time champions in school history. Waverly, Decorah, and Charles City hold 9-2 marks. Delve and Go-Hawks path noted with prior key win 60-59.
Former Raiders kicker and Chiefs member Mike Eischeid has taken an interim role as an admissions counselor at Upper Iowa College. He earned a B.S. from Upper Iowa in 1963 and an M.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in 1970. He previously played in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears and taught at several Iowa high schools. He will assist northern Iowa high school guidance counselors by sharing information about Upper Iowa and prospective students.
Basketball results across colleges and high school show Wisconsin 66 over Indiana 77 in the Big Ten, Drake 77 Wichita State 5, Northwestern defeating Willam Penn 75, and Iowa State contests. High school and junior college scores appear with Creston and Kirkwood among others. About 7,500 young athletes played varsity basketball statewide this season.
In the 1970 71 fiscal year the IHSAA reports basketball wrestling and baseball as the only profitable sports. Track and field golf swimming tennis and gymnastics posted losses totaling $58 ? corrections show net deficits. profits from the three profitable sports finance coaching clinics and other ITISAA programs.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association lists more than 4,000 registered athletic officials in the state and reports that over 2,200 are licensed to officiate basketball. This shows a robust pool of referees for high school events and indicates growing specialization within officiating ranks.
In Oelwein West Central, ranked No. 2, meets young Wapsie Valley in a high stakes district semifinal at 8:00 with Denver facing Maquoketa Valley at 6:30. Earlier, Wapsie downed Oelwein 75-53 as Huebner led with 42 points. Denver beat MFL 58-52.
In a Sacred Heart men's league game Lamont beat the Jaycees 75 to 35 keeping second place. P Steffin led Lamont with 18 points while Wearmouth scored 26 for the Jaycees. Sam's topped Super Valu 20 points by Duffy. Breen had 25 for the losers. Thorp edged Stanley with Woods scoring 39 for the winners. Duckett led the losers with 29. Mickey Lolich and Joe Cole each had 14 strikeouts in a season. Dodger Sam McDowell also had 14 strikeouts as a Cleveland Indian.
