French naval authorities report eight Americans missing after a shore leave launch from the carrier Midway capsized returning from a gala at Hyeres casino. One officer and seven sailors are unaccounted for as rescue teams search the rugged Hyeres coast amid heavy seas.
Peter P. Laposky of Cherokee filed today as the fourth Republican candidate seeking nomination papers for governor. Jesse G. Dimmitt of Ottumwa requested papers for Congress in the Fourth District, while incumbent Karl Lecompte of Corydon is the only Iowa representative to have requested papers.
Maytag plans a new 5 million dollar factory to produce automatic washing machines. Fred Maytag II said sites in Des Moines Newton and Cedar Rapids are considered with options on land. Completion and production are expected within a year.
The Presbyterian Baptist Episcopal Wesleyan Methodist First Methodist and Four Square churches join for Lenten services starting Sunday at First Presbyterian with Rev R C Kruschwitz speaking. Through Feb 22 to Apr ? each week a different minister leads at their own church with special music. Good Friday service is a combined Baptist event 12 to 3 with meditations on the last words of Jesus. Maundy Thursday will be Holy Communion in each church.
Services for David C. Morris, a former Oelwein resident, will be at 2 p m Thursday at Hintz Funeral home, conducted by Rev. C F Perron, with burial in a Dunham Grove cemetery near Randalia. The body arrives Wednesday night. friends may call Thursday morning. Morris, who managed the Mealey hotel here, died Friday at Huron, South Dakota, after a heart attack. Survivors are his wife, children, and a sister.
Gerald Bogan to become news bureau manager for the Iowa Daily Press association on March 1 replacing John W. Henderson who resigns to join the U S state department. Bogan 35, educated in Clarinda and Des Moines with prior work at KSO and United Press.
Chicago youths headline a murder trial as 13 year old Howard Lane faces charges for killing seven year old Lonnie Felbek. The boy, the youngest defendant in city history, cried that the proceedings scare him. Jury selected from three housewives and a businessman. Defense cites juvenile delinquency and mental retardation, seeking temporary insanity.
Rising rivers from a winter thaw threatened floods in six states including Ohio Pennsylvania Maryland Kentucky Indiana and Illinois. Ohio's Ohio River surpassed flood level near Cincinnati with highs near 55 feet while Southern Ohio lowlands flooded. Portsmouth Ohio escaped major flood as Potomac ice jams eased. Warm weather eased fuel oil and gas shortages, aiding Detroit plants and restoring idle workers.
State Fire Marshal John Eb. Strohm recommended a full-time fire chief for each of the six state mental hospitals after a 1937 survey found life and fire hazards in all 14 state institutions. The board will now consult the marshal before building or doubling projects, noting many buildings are so old that adequate protection is virtually impossible.

He cited plans under President Truman's 10 year health plan and a national health assembly conference set for May. Officials estimate by 1960 the nation will need 152000 to 30000 more physicians than available.
About 600 men joined a fox hunting event Sunday in Fayette County hosted by the Conservation club. The hunt spanned a 25 mile square area with participants from Independence, Arteton, Aurora, Pordsie Maynaed, Westgate, Tyeffe, Stacley, and Celwein. Only two foxes were killed Sunday, but the next day more were reported in the vicinity. This morning four additional foxes were found nearby. The club provided 40 gallons of coffee for the hunters.
A large nine room frame house built in the 1880s, formerly the Fieniken home, owned by Petal Higgins, was destroyed by fire on Monday. The blaze started from a stove in a back room. The fire drew responses from both down and rural fire trucks. The Fieniken and Higgins families escaped with only smoke and water damage to belongings. insurance was carried. Harold Rankin and his family occupied the second floor apartment.

Chicago Great Western conductor Case reported a carload of fuel oil and gasoline went missing after a northbound train out of Berwick, Ja., halted. He found splintered planking and a disconnnected air hose on a tank car, and later crews located the fuel and oil on opposite sides of the track near the right of way fence.
In Mason City the state plans to call several rebuttal witnesses in the first degree murder trial of Charles Ver Helst 19. The defense rested yesterday without testifying. Ver Helst is accused of strangling his 16 year old sweetheart Arlene Mott last November. Witnesses Dr. Egloff and Dr. Morgan testified it is possible to be rendered unconscious by a blow with no visible injury. Ver Helst maintains he was struck by an unknown assailant and cannot recall the events afterward.
Rickey and Major League owners revealed a conspiracy to bar Negro players at a Wilberforce State University banquet. They disclosed a unified plan discussed in late April 1945 to undermine Rickey’s efforts to integrate baseball. The owners warned that introducing black players would jeopardize the game’s investment, a claim attributed to a senior baseball executive who declined to identify the author.
Democrats announced precinct caucuses across Fayette County on March 1 with the county central committee to meet the next week to outline primary campaign plans. The party meeting last night discussed filling vacancies and possible candidates for county offices. Fremont Clark’s resignation as county chairman will be addressed at the central committee meeting.
Grain prices opened steady with slight gains on the Chicago board with wheat unchanged to up a penny, corn up 3-3/8 cents, and soybeans up eight cents. The Buchanan county grand jury Monday morning dismissed two cases for lack of evidence. A charge against Clair Paans Westphal was dismissed and one assault case involving intent to commit felony against Thomas H. Price was also dismissed. The jury visited the county home and courthouse and recommended repairs to the board of supervisors. Members listed: Clark Evers, A. E. Senft, Claude Hermann, Earl Wilson, Carl Breckenfelder, L. C. Megow, Ernie Gusse. The case Steele v Rehmel for personal injury settled for 875 dollars on Feb 16, involving Don Higgins and the Rehmel car on Highway 1150. Steele was a passenger. attorneys Estey, Ester, and others participated. Ray Kremer represented Rehmel.

North Korea marked the second anniversary of its People’s Committee with a military parade in Pyongyang as army officers reported two United States liaison officers, Maj. Darrel C. Costello and Maj. Richard C. Biggs, mauled by a crowd of Korean spectators while observing the event. The two officers, stationed in Russian-occupied Korea from Berkeley, California, were identified by U.S. authorities.
William Conway in his eighties was found dead at his Fairbank home by his brothers Franke and Joe Conway. Funeral services set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Conway residence with burial in Fairbank Cemetery. believed heart attack caused death after he was found in bed Monday morning.
Milam Paine 82, a retired Fairbank farmer, died at 8 this morning at his home in Fetbank. Born June 27, 1867, in Brehanen county, he spent his life in the Fairbank community. Survived by four sons Clifford and Claude, both of Fairbank. James of Hampton. Clarence of Waterloo. one sister Harriet Brant of Fairbank. The body will lie in state at Brent Funeral Home until services. Burial will be at Fairbank cemetery.
