Five bodies recovered and 11 listed missing after a three-story frame building fire on a narrow west side street. Fire officials say an oil burner explosion likely started the blaze at about 4:30 AM, with floors collapsing and one wall held by a telephone pole. A 13-year-old girl, Mary Hoage, survived by jumping to snow from a second story porch.

The U S Public Health Service approved a 320 million hospital building program for Iowa. It will fund about 1 3409 million annually for two years, covering one third of costs. Counties must apply by May for first year funds. The plan envisions adding 6036 beds to reach 12483 total. University of Iowa hospitals receive provision in the program per Dr Walter L Bierring.
