Teachers Lead 230 Pupils From Burning Elk Run School
Firefighters blamed an overheated furnace for a blaze at Elk Run rural grade school east of here. One building was destroyed and 230 pupils were moved to safety from a basement lunchroom with six teachers guiding them. No injuries were reported. Fire Chief Ray Tiller said the fire started beneath the third and fourth grade wings.
