Packers May Refuse Raise Push From Government Panel
Washington UP The meat industry may reject a government fact finding board report proposing a 16 cent hourly raise for packing house workers. The panel said 11 cents could be covered under existing price controls, leaving five cents absorbable by the industry with subsidies. One union accepted. the other CIO union held back for a wage policy meeting. The board noted the 16 cent raise would lift direct labor costs by about eight to 10 percent share of total costs, total industry employment roughly 175,000.
