Oelwein Sees Temperature Plunge Through Night
In Oelwein the temperature fell about 44 degrees in roughly 10 hours yesterday. An unofficial reading nearby showed 54 degrees at one point as downtown stores opened their doors slightly to admit air. Last Survivors of Yukon Saved After Shipwreck
Rescue crews saved the last survivors of the Yukon wrecked off Seward Alaska after a blizzard drove the liner against rocks. 371 passengers and 134 crew were aboard. 10 still missing. Survivors were taken to Seward for medical care and fed hot meals at nine rescue ships.

Navy mailman Michael Conley returns home after service
Conley arrived yesterday from Great Lakes Indiana after an honorable Navy discharge. He completed boat training and served in the mail department at Fort Pierce Florida for 78 months, then stationed at various fleet nostifices for nine months. After a short vacation he will resume work with Liggitt and Meyer Tobacco Co. His wife and family reside here with his parents Mr and Mrs Joe Conley.

Arliss Dies at 77 in London Home After Bronchial Illness

Plaster Released After Pacific Navy Service
Westgate man Paul J. Plaster, gunner's mate second class, received an honorable discharge at Great Lakes Separation Center. Enlisted May 23, 1943, he served in South Pacific with Commander Service Squadron No. 10, earning American Defense Victory and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons with three bronze stars. He has resided at Great Lakes for six months and plans to live with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Gus Plaster of Westgate at their home near Oewen with his wife.

Mike Duckett 79 Dies at Stanley
Stanley obituary reports Mike Duckett of Fay ette and Buchanan counties died at his home at 1 am aged 79. Services set for Friday at 2 am at the home and 2:30 pm at Union church with burial in Stanley cemetery. He was a farmer, survived by his wife and five children including Fleet Davis Gilbert Duckett Mark Duckett Muriel Guy Gerald Duckett. He had been in ill health for some time before retirement.

Girl Dies in Flight From Dubuque Home
In Dubuque Iowa a. Claudette Turner 18 Des Moines was found dead in a cornfield two miles from the Good Shepherd School after an escape attempt thwarted by a snowstorm. The Dubuque county coroner said death was due to exposure and exhaustion. Three other girls aged unknown were found in a chicken coop on the Henry Goodshark farm, all in serious condition from exposure after fleeing the school and missing overnight.
