Fire destroyed part of the Sargent and Company feed plant in Des Moines yesterday. Estimated loss about 125000 with about 18000 bushels of grain and 200 tons of feed lost. Owners say most loss covered by insurance and rebuilding will proceed promptly.

Mystery Fires Firestarter 13 Year Old Girl Confesses

A 13 year old girl from Macomb Illinois admitted starting a series of fires that destroyed a Willey house and two barns. State's Attorney Keith Scott said the girl lit the fires to avoid returning to a farm and that she acted alone using matches. She told authorities she began the blaze in the house and then set fires to the barns before leaving unseen.

First to register for peacetime draft in Oelwein

Norbert Earl Dulfy, route 2, was the first to register for the postwar draft at the Oelwein fire station as officials opened the local board from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. He, born in Fairbank and now a junior at Upper Town university, said the draft is timely with about fifteen registrants by 1:55 PM. Huge Grasshopper Army Reported Near Celweiln

Motorists returning from the State fair about 3:00 p m observed aerial swarms of grasshoppers spanning about two miles ten miles west of Celwein. On reaching home radiator inspection revealed very few insects, suggesting the insects were aloft during travel.
