District 19 of the state highway patrol conducted a light drive check in Oelwein and Manchester on Friday with Oelwein police assistance. Officers issued 117 warnings, 208 violations were reported, one memorandum and eight operator license summons were issued. A total of 750 cars were checked.

About 11 000 Iowa veterans or their dependents will receive extra federal compensation next month. Des Moines VA Center manager W B Nugent says 3 000 WWII era veterans will gain from a law raising monthly rates for 60 percent disabled veterans from 6.72 to 91 dollars, depending on dependents and disability. New death compensation benefits for 8 000 widows children and dependent parents also take effect Sept 1 for service or war time deaths. Some dependents on non service connected pensions are unaffected. New disability and death rates are automatic. Nugent urged veterans not to delay.

Blinded by Lights Causes Ditch Crash Near Oelwein
Urban Kuennen of Maynard lost control of a 1941 Dodge when blinded by oncoming lights Friday night five miles north of Oelwein. The car overturned into the left ditch. Florenc Adams of Maynard, riding with Kuennen, suffered cuts and bruises. Kuennen had minor bruises. Sgt. Kermit Rhoades of Oelwein investigated.

Hawkeye special report funeral services for Belle Hurdy 84 will be held Sunday at 2 30 in Manchester. She died at home Friday with daughter Mrs Frank Ridenour of Davenport present. A brief prayer will follow at Hawkeye cemetery. A former resident, she moved twenty years ago and once ran a hardware and clothing store. Survived by son Leland of Omaha and four daughters and two stepdaughters.

Services Sunday for Former Hawkeye Resident Schultz
William Schultz 58 of Marysville California, a former Hawkeye resident, was killed in an accident near Vacaville. His body arrived here Saturday, with funeral services set for Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2 PM. He served in World War I, worked 22 years in Marysville, and is survived by three brothers and one sister.

Moorhead Minnesota police say Mr and Mrs Clifford Halvorson admitted depraved neglect leading to the death of their baby girl Joyce. The couple began a 90 day jail sentence after their two young sons fatally beat the child at a carnival because she cried. Eleven Halvorson children were taken into state welfare custody.
