A dismissed former communist leader claimed to have formed a covert group of four once powerful figures and noted ex government members implicated in a plan to seize control, while efforts to deceive authorities were described as part of an underground scheme.
H. M. Burtness, president of the Chicago Great Western Railway for two years, resigned today to the board of directors effective September 1. He will stay on as a board member and executive committee member while R. A. Gardner leads the executive committee in the interim. Burtness had led CGW since August 1922, after succeeding Patrick H. Joyce, and previously served as assistant to the president and early as vice president in 1941.
The Commerce Commission ordered Great Western to install flashing signals at two Dyersville crossings by March 1 and set train speeds, with passenger trains limited to 30 mph and freight to 25 mph, due to rising railroad grades and safety concerns.
National Guards used a Sherman tank bayonets and a tear gas detailed truck to disperse a crowd at the Univis Lens Co plant. About 400 workers and supporters pressed toward the gates, but reinforcements and gas drove them back. The plant reopened for a morning shift as guards checked credentials.
Oelwein police handed 62 motorists tickets for overtime parking in July. Chief Paul Galer's monthly report shows five arrests for intoxication and two each for reckless driving and speeding. Additional arrests covered offenses from operating with a whistle to larceny over $20. Officers handled 131 red light calls and 19 accidents. department car mileage totaled 2,694 miles.
New York report says American Communist leaders pledged to back Henry A. Wallace and his new Progressive Party in November. William Z. Foster, party chairman, announced the endorsement at Madison Square Garden before 17,000 supporters, calling the party a defender of democracy against fascism and monopoly. Foster, a three-time presidential candidate, denounced Wall Street imperialists and bipartisan politics while claiming Russia seeks peace.
Independence special report says Bob Schanke age 20 remains unconscious with a broken leg in People's Hospital after an early morning accident. Driver Jack Brian Hovey 18 also from Independence is treated for shock and bruises. Their model A Ford hit a cement abutment on highway No. 20 five miles west of Jesup while returning from Waterloo.
Linda's Apparel shop has secured the Evans fur company of Chicago, announced by Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hosmer yesterday. The firm will advertise its first Evans show this week to promote the new line at Linda's shop.
John Fletcher Dawson a Fayette county resident died Monday at his Waterloo home. Born January 14 1860 in Evansville Wisconsin he moved to Fayette county as a child and later settled near Maynard. He married Martha E Badger in Maynard on November 29 1884 and has lived in Waterloo 16 years. He is survived by his wife three daughters two sons two sisters 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral at 9:00 Wednesday at St John Catholic Church Waterloo burial in Maynard.
Mary Eva Bare, a May graduate of Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls, has joined the West Communities M C A in Chicago as girls and womens work secretary. She held roles in several honor societies and plans to assist with the summer day camp starting August 13 at the Y.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at the Berg Funeral chapel in Sumner for Mrs. Zoa Smith Hannaman Woods 56 who died Sunday at the Tom Hannaman home near Tripoli after a heart attack. The Rev. P. P. Jenison of Maynard will officiate and burial will be in Maynard cemetery. Survivors include son Darrell of Sumner, sisters Vista Voss of Maynard and Grace Voss of Lelon S Dak, and three grandchildren Marlowe Merlin and Joanne Hannaman.
A street cleaner found a small bomb among columns in St. Peter's Square. Vatican officials called the Italian army artillery unit. Bomb disposal squads detonated the device outside the square, causing a strong explosion that shook a nearby building.
Dorothy Pulley Thomas, 28, is held for investigation in the death of Roosevelt Thomas, 32, shot in front of a Waterloo supper club. Police say witnesses saw the quarrel prior to the shooting. Thomas died instantly and charges are expected to be filed today.
Dallas housewives led by 71-year-old Mrs. R. D. Vaughn organized a one week meat boycott targeting Dallas markets. The campaign expanded to four Texas towns as Vaughn urged women to call local directories to enlist 320 pages of volunteers. She blamed high prices on butchers packers and farmers while promising action.
J C Jensen assistant director of the Iowa Development Commission told the Oelwein Rotary club that Iowa towns including Oelwein have laid groundwork to draw factories. He noted many manufacturers wait until fall to finalize plans and suggested election-year caution. The commission has 10 unpaid members led by Roger Selby to steer industry attraction statewide.
In Oskaloosa Iowa a district judge issued a temporary injunction halting tree removal along Avenue A as police faced about 100 protesting women. Eight trees were felled before the ruling. Hearing for a permanent injunction is set for Aug 16.

William Joseph, 21, of Cresco, is jailed in Fayette County after an attempted spousal homicide against Mrs. Joseph. He shot at her with a .32 automatic pistol after twice trying to wreck her car. shells did not explode. Mrs. Joseph, separated from her husband, had been visiting Cresco with their three month old baby. She fled to a Sumner farmhouse. Sheriff House and others pursued Joseph, who later surrendered in Sumner. He reportedly said, I just came here to bump her off. The case involves charges to be filed by Mrs. Joseph or the county attorney.
Fran Legal News Desk reports William Schultz, 58, a former Hawkeye resident, was killed in a transport truck accident yesterday near Marysville, California. His body will return to Hawkeye this week for funeral arrangements to be announced. Born March 19, 1890, in Herschel, he moved to Fayette County at age nine and lived in the area until World War I, when he served overseas. Survivors include brothers Herman and Albert of Hawkeye, George of Kankakee, Sr., and sister Mrs Art Man of Buckingham, Ill., with parents Louis and Louis Schultz preceded in death.
Senator Taft said it would be absolutely impossible to break the southern anti poll tax filibuster without changing Senate rules and suggested a temporary truce on civil rights. GOP leaders planned to adjourn Saturday after a late Senate session aimed at clearing the agenda for high prices housing and inflation actions.
Moscow reports indicate renewed high level talks between the United States Great Britain and France with Premier Stalin or Foreign Minister Molotov. Western diplomats left the Kremlin optimistic about a quick solution to Germany and the Berlin crisis though further steps were uncertain for about 36 hours. The talks focused on the four occupying powers aims in Germany with rapid, direct discussion and brief record time.
The U S 800 meter relay team won the Olympic championship in a new world mark of minutes 46 seconds, led by Wally Ris and Bill Smith. Hungary finished second, also breaking the old record, while Wilbur Thompson, Mel Patton, Vicki Draves, and Arthur Cook won other U S medals in track and field and shooting events.
