FAIRBANK Special funeral services were held this morning at Immaculate Conception church for J B Murphy Fairbank who died Friday morning at his home in Fairbank Rev Tropey officiated and burial was in the Catholic cemetery He was born in Hazleton Nov 2 1879 and moved to Fairbank as a child He married Mayme Hilbert in 1901 He is survived by his wife two sons Laurence Rochester Minn and Robert Waterloo one daughter Mrs Joseph Puff Mount Harris Colo four grandchildren one sister Mrs Nellie Beniley Oelwein Two sons preceded him in death Donald in 1940 and Joseph in 1919 He operated a livery stable 1900 1919 and later worked for Standard Oil Co until his appointment as postmaster in 1934.

CHICAGO UP The 30 day cooling off period ends at midnight tonight. Three unions representing about 150000 engineers firemen and switchmen can strike legally at any time beginning tomorrow if no agreement on their demands is reached by midnight. A strike would halt most freight and passenger service nationwide even if other unions cross picket lines. The unions demand a 1544 cent an hour raise as proposed by the railroads and a presidential recommendation for the same.
Speaker Martin said the oleomargarine tax repeal fight is nearly finished with the repeal likely to pass the House. If approved, the 10 cent per pound oleo tax and the quarter cent white oleo levy would be erased, letting colored oleo be priced like white varieties in many states. The butter bloc warns of heated debate before final vote.

Mrs Edna Braun aged 46 was found hanging in the barn at the Leon residence about 1 pm Sunday. Sheriff Emery Hart and Coroner Fay Ruffcor responded with Patrolman Emory Galloway. Braun, formerly of Fairbank, had been a housekeeper at the Thom farm since February 13. She is survived by six children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Buchanan county officer Earl Sherf arrested Orin Prentice at Otterville while running line and possessing three catfish. Prentice paid a $50 fine plus costs after appearing before Justice Engstrom. Saturday Sherf arrested Clifford Baker Maynard and Kenneth Baker Oclwein for snagging fish at Littleton dam and each paid $25 and costs before Justice Johnson.

Millard Horace Douglass of Waterloo was arrested Saturday evening after his car hit a culvert two miles west of Independence on Highway 20. His wife, a passenger, was taken to People's Hospital with cuts and dental injuries. condition improved. Douglas, charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, was bound over to district court on $500 bond and jailed overnight. He is a deputy collector for the United States bureau of internal revenue.

Des Moines attorney Ralph N. Lynch 52 admitted shooting and beating Edward Krueger 60 in self defense after Krueger clouted his wife and became abusive. Paul Nus ten, son of Clar ence Nus, Hawkeye, is hospitalized in Mercy, Oelwein, with three broken ribs and five fractures after a Palomino pony bolted toward his home and collided with a truck driven by Russell Granneman. The pony's head shattered the windshield, its leg was badly cut and had to be killed, with about 300 dollars in front end damage to the truck. Paul’s condition was listed as good after a quiet night.
Duluth Minnesota two 12 year olds were chosen to join a world wide astronomy project. John Andrews and Douglas Dyrbrig will take nightly readings of the northern lights over Duluth. The task is to help chart the aurora borealis globally for the National Geographic Society and Cornell University.
Gov. R. D. Blue will address Upper Iowa University in Fayette at the weekly assembly Wednesday at 10 am. A special program is planned and the public is invited. Mr and Mrs Daniels were injured when their car crashed on Curve 18 near West Union Iowa. Mrs Daniels suffered a fractured leg skull and jaw with facial cuts. Mr Daniels dislocated his hip and reported a bug entering his eye before losing control. he and his wife were returned to West Union Hospital and then Iowa City for treatment. He is the driver returning from Clermont and they are married. she is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J Bowdish.
