Fourth of Jap fleet lost in two day battle
A navy spokesman said more than a quarter of the remaining Japanese fleet was destroyed in a two day battle off southern Japan near Okinawa. He noted the fleet was high speed vessels attempting a sneak raid and said Japan's ships remain under constant surveillance by American air and sea forces. In the Guam theater Admiral Nimitz announced the Yamato and several other ships were sunk or damaged during the Okinawa operation, with American losses including three destroyers and seven planes.

Funeral services were held Thursday for Miss Rosanna Rothlisberger aged 76 who died Tuesday morning. The body was taken to Ilyma township for burial in the Mlyria church cemetery. Rosanna, born December 2 1868 in Pleasant Valley township, spent her life in Fayette County. She is survived by two brothers John of Nichita Kansas Fred of Elgin and two sisters Mrs Louisa Badis Ida Mattocks both of Colo and several others.

About 400 B 29 Superfortresses escorted by long range Mustang fighters bombed Musashina and Mitsubishi engine plants on Honshu. It was the largest land based attack on the homeland and the first joint strike with fighters over Japan. Clermont school musicians won three firsts in the contest at Waukon Friday while other local entrants place second.
