The Georgia legislature advances a bill to pension widows of Confederate soldiers who died in battle or from service injuries and who remained unmarried. A constitutional amendment will be needed to legalize pensions, with eligibility estimated under 1,000 widows. orphans are not yet provided for.

Helzhay the Gogebic stage robber, captured Saturday, is handed to Gogebic County Sheriff and escorted to prison aboard the westbound South Shore train. He remains defiant and fears escape, admitting he held up multiple trains and stage routes in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Authorities anticipate a life term at Mariannaette State Prison.
Carliste D. Graham rode a barrel over Niagara Falls yesterday morning. The craft plunged 600 feet then drifted into the river. Rescuers Almer Jones and Michael Cahill pulled Graham ashore as onlookers feared for his life. He was badly bruised but alive, with a long recovery ahead.
Two thousand coal heavers and barge men employed by Parker Lambert joined the strike. Five thousand railway men met at Darlington and vowed to strike for shorter hours. In Bissemain Michigan a coroner inquest found Holszay killed Fleschbein of Belleville. The jury sent the case to the October term. United States Agent Pulsifer claims Holszay robbed the U S mail. prosecutors oppose the claim, arguing for life or manslaughter penalties.
In Cobb County near Bowder Springs a wedding turned to tragedy when Miss McFadden fainted and died moments before the ceremony. The bride’s body, ready in bridal robes, was laid out for burial as Edward Smelt of Charleston expected a wedding. Colonel John McFadden, a leading planter, had planned a grand social event with bridesmaids from several states.

William J. Fry, jailed for drunkenness last Wednesday, died in his cell last night by stabbing himself in the heart with a lead pencil. Four or five puncture wounds were found just over the heart, a lead pencil broken and covered with blood lay in his pocket.
The widow of Captain Bienerson claims the original flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner floated over Fort McHenry and is not in Eben Applicton's possession. She says the flag covered her husband’s body and he is buried in Green Mount Cemetery.
