Amid tumult and speeches from Blaine to Morton supporters, Levi Morton of New York receives rising backing as the Republican ticket’s vice presidential choice. Delegates discuss platform vows on tariffs, pensions, and federal reforms as Harrison is nominated for president on a later ballot.
Promptly at 10 o clock this morning the Chicago convention opened with Chairman Estee in attendance despite hoarseness. Senator Warner Miller of New York presided as balloting began with Alger 193 Allison 88 Gresham 9 Harrison 217 Sherman 23 Blaine 2 Lincoln 1 McKinley HM Douglass 1 Foreaker 1. Fifth ballot shows Alger 1? Allison 99 Gresham Sf Harrison 213 Sherman 224 Blaine.
The sketches describe Morrison as a lawyer who served as Union officer in the Civil War rising to Brigadier General and later court reporter. It notes Harrison becoming U S Senator in 1841, Morton rising from Vermont stock to banking and politics, and Boatman era appointments including minister to France and 1880 ticket talk.
A Mexico City dispatch reports unprecedented rains for ten days along the Central railway, turning rivulets into destructive floods. Leon and Silao suffered major inundation, with half the city submerged and many killed or drowned. El Paso area notes 1500 deaths and 100 miles of line blocked, delaying mails and freight for days.
Six laborers were killed and five gravely injured when a gravel train on the Pennsylvania railroad rear collided with a freight train near Cable City Pa. Workers escaped by jumping as cars piled up and wreckage delayed recovery efforts.
In New York on June 26 Jos. Zaferd sixteen, a hall boy at 125 West Fourth Street, shot Rosie Sheridan nineteen, an assistant cook, in the head and then killed himself with the same weapon. He had been desperately in love, but she paid him no heed.
Early today a small frame house on Edwards street burned, killing thirteen year old Maud Burmeister and Mrs. Maggie Ross of Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. Lad Burmeister and three younger children escaped.
Mrs. Wm Allen of Danville received $1000 for the death of her husband a baggage man with the Wabash railroad killed at Edwardsville Illinois during June 26 proceedings.
Anperson, S. C., June 26. Mrs. M. E. Reese of this place was arrested for arson. It is charged that she has repeatedly attempted to burn the town.
A boiler exploded yesterday afternoon at Hogue's Mill west of Effingham killing two men and seriously injuring three others. Fire officials and nearby workers responded to the accident scene. The identities of the deceased and injured were not immediately released.
