Houston reports the yesterdays storm as the most disastrous in the region. Galveston city wrecked with many homes destroyed and thousands feared dead or missing. Sabine Pass and nearby towns reported complete destruction while bridges and rail lines were severely damaged along 100 miles inland.
Sept 10 Wallas Tex reports telegraphic communication with South Texas severed up to 100 miles north of Houston. By 3 am Sunday unreliable Galveston news and rumors of disaster spread. Western Union line to Houston down since 1:30 am. storm wrecks lines, causes wide damage and fatalities. Smithville partially destroyed. several killed. Railroad and telegraph crews struggle through the storm.
Sept 10 report from Houston details a sweeping hurricane along the Columbia Top railroad route. At Oyster Creek and Angleton crews find multiple fatalities and wrecked homes. Arcola and Brookshire report collapsed houses and deaths. Alvin and nearby Isrockshire tally additional deaths as rescue teams recover eleven bodies.
A Houston telegram to the News describes relief efforts at Virginia Point after a disaster. A relief train could not reach within six miles, with lumber debris and many corpses visible on the prairie. a steamer is stranded two miles away. Estimates of fatalities reach about two thousand.
Meager reports from along the Santa Fe line describe a devastating Texas tornado. Alvin is reportedly demolished with seven killed. Alta Loma, Vearl, Hitch cock suffer severe or total destruction. Carlton tallies total ruin of buildings and crops in Alvin.
New Orleans reports the Norwegian steamer Utstein, under Capt. Aarsvold, arrived from Porto Cortez after a severe battle with wind and waves. The liner Jos Oteri Jr. is anchored 40 miles south of Southwest Pass with its rudder post gone, and a towboat has been sent to assist.
Capetown dispatch reports Sir Redvers Buller crossing the Mauchberg ten miles east of Lydenburg and engaging Boer forces. Lydenburg’s occupation last Thursday marks a major war milestone. Boer forces reportedly plan to trek into German territory as Lord Methuen moves on Lydenburg from Mafeking. Papers seized at Pretoria allegedly show the Netherlands Railway Co aided the Boers by converting workshops to arsenals and supplying horse shoes.
Washington reports no new developments from the Chinese crisis. Chaffee remains at the War Department with no dispatches. Tokyo telegrams say Prince Ching returns to Peking to arrange affairs and meet foreigners. Japanese forces guard his residence as negotiations for peace begin. Emperor Kwang Su reportedly at Usu en Hwa Fu with other casualties and deaths tied to the unrest.
Fourteen thousand miners from Shamokin to Mt. Carmel received news from UMWA secretary George Hartlein that President Mitchell ordered a postponement of the strike. miners hope concessions from operators and await Indianapolis updates. If none occur in days, Mitchell may order a strike.
Springfield dispatch reports General John A. McClernand showing slight improvement. He takes nourishment and there is a shadow of hope for his recovery after a period of poor health.
Details from Tromsoe about the Stella Polare Arctic voyage show the last season pushing toward 82 degrees north before freezing in at Teplitz bay. Frostbite injuries and amputations afflicted the crew and leader. Several parties failed to reach the ship and food shortages forced dog flesh rations as the Stella Polare began homeward amid drift ice.
Dr. Talmage preaches from Luke 23 33 using the Calvary scene to urge belief in Christ. He contrasts the unbelieving right hand cross with the repentant left and the saving middle cross, urging repentance faith and dedication to Jesus for eternal deliverance.
Census Bureau reports 54 cities with a total population of 14 644 000, an average 27.9 percent per city rise. In 1890 those same cities had 11 150 045 residents, a total gain of 3 494 666, with a 31.33 percent rise calculated differently.
Havana reports that tobacco growers have asked Gov. Gen. Wood to remove the export tax on tobacco. The petition, favored for affecting only low grade leaf mainly sent to Spain, follows. Mayor fien Rodriguez will be notified Saturday that municipal bonds may be issued to sever Havana. The council votes no confidence as the mayor keeps his staff.
Frank W. Browning on a ranch near Fresno became insane and shot a Japanese man he imagined conspired against him. He then went to a powder house half a mile away, set it on fire, and was blown to pieces with the blast.
The government ship Goodwin, now at Tacoma, loads 2,500,000 feet of building lumber for troops in the Orient, plus 600 doors and 800 windows, then sails to Taku, China where a temporary post is to be established by the War Department.
In Chicago on September 8 a steeplechase accident at Harlem saw rider Leando topple at the first jump and land on Jockey C. Johnson, who was carried off on a stretcher and remained unconscious for about an hour. Doctors warned of possible internal injuries but expected no serious outcome.
Clarksville Tennessee on September 10 reports the death of J. T. Grant a well known local newspaper man at age 36 from an overdose of morphine. authorities say it was probably taken with suicidal intent during a period of mental depression.
Washington reports Nashville Tennessee population growth from 1890 to 1900. City totals show 1900 census figures with a rise of 4 697 residents, equating to a 6.17 percent increase over the 1890 counts.
The military attache and Lieut. Col Livermore of the U S legation, spending several days in Berlin, will attend maneuvers in Stockholm and will next move to Stettin with Emperor William's suite.
