Indiana Tax Burden If Railroads Are State Owned

An Indianapolis official analysis of Bryan’s plan for government ownership of railroads warns Indiana would face a colossal debt burden. He estimates local lines cost at least 103 million to buy, with annual interest around 4.1 million and a total tax levy potentially rising to 72 cents per $100. Railroads now paying about 5 million in taxes would lose that revenue, forcing broad property-tax increases and county strain, especially in Lake County where rail taxes constitute about half of local receipts. The piece notes Democratic papers largely stay neutral.
