A famine rages in northeastern Japan with tens of thousands starving and children sold by desperate households. President Roosevelt appeals to Americans to aid Japan, while local churches urge rapid relief and prayers as reports describe widespread hunger and extreme cold.
The speaker recalls a simple country house a mile from town with porch morning glory, taters to harvest, an orchard, cat birds nest and honey suckle. They compare it to stone houses with electric lights and fine silverware, but deem their old place and country ways superior.
Edith Brookshire was granted a divorce from Charles Brookshire this week on desertion grounds. Her maiden name Edith Bunch was restored. The couple wed in 1903.
