Fourth of July Celebration Highlights and Donor List

The Fourth celebration in Odon drew a large afternoon crowd after a morning drizzle. Senator Gara Mattingly and Hon. Thea H Kuhn spoke, backed by the Southern Indiana band and a vocal chorus. Local firms and individuals donated 23.00 to cover expenses, with smaller contributions from others.

Strong Gas Flow Found on Reeve Township Farm

A strong gas flow was encountered Sunday on Austin Allen’s farm near Alfordsville. The well reached 465 feet with high pressure and lies close to a recently drilled hole near the Martin county line. DeWalt Oil & Gas Company operates the site and reports good quality gas powering their engine. They believe they are near a large vein and continue rapid development in the Reeve township field.

Whitlocks Win Bridge Contract for Leimone Township

The Whitlocks secured county contracts to build two bridges named Killion and Morr in Leimone township. Estimates and bids show John Dobbs of Elnora bid 8180 on Killion with Whitlocks at 8449, and on Mauve bridge Dobbs bid 320 with the successful bidder at 319. Work to start about July 20.

Odon Board of Health Warns Against Privy Vault Disposal

The Board of Health warns property owners it is unlawful to bury privy vault contents, rubbish, or unsound vegetable matter as it pollutes wells and risks typhoid fever. Violations carry a fine from 25 to 210 dollars. such items must be removed entirely. J. DeMotte, secretary.

The Pomona Kansas Republican reports Mrs. Rachel J. Ricksecker buried July 1. Born April 13, 1848 in Ohio, she died June 25 1958 in California at age 70. One surviving Smiley brother, Harvey Smiley of this city, and Ovid H. Ricksecker live on.

Standiford Danner Vows in Bogard Township Ceremony

Blanche Danner married Leo Standiford in a Sunday afternoon ceremony at the bride's father's home. Rev C H Buchanan officiated, about thirty five guests attended. Supper followed. Mrs Standiford, youngest Danner daughter, is described as popular. Standiford, son of James Standiford, is a Bogard township farmer and bridge carpenter. The couple plans to settle on a farm in Bogard township.
