Medium and Heavy Horses Demand Shifts in 1910s United States
USDA analysis shows farm horse numbers fell nationwide by 1914 with demand shifting to medium and heavy draft horses. Prices rose in Chicago from 171 to 252 by 1918, while general horses peaked at 352 in 1918. Southern markets favored “southern chunks” as overall farm horse value climbed from 55.47 to 111.46 by 1911 before sliding to 48 in 1919.

Oat Straw Serves as Feed For Light Work Horses
An experiment at the Missouri station found oat straw nearly matches timothy hay in value for horses at light work. For 1400 pound horses the rations included 15 pounds corn and cob meal plus two thirds of a pound oilcake daily, with oat straw performing closely to prairie upland hay per North Dakota findings.
