Homestake Mine Named by Mose Manuel and Brother
A century ago Mose Manuel and brother Fred, with partner Henry Harney, found rich float near Lead, Dakota Territory. After snow delayed search, Mose persuaded Harney to fund renewed digging, locating a lode they dubbed Homestake, later developed by George Hearst into one of the world’s richest mines. The tale echoes through American mining history.
