Fire damages Pershing poultry house on E Walnut

A roof fire at C. E. Pershing's poultry and packing plant on E Walnut Street Sunday around eleven o'clock was halted by firemen. Foreman Lester Commings raised the alarm. chemical engines confined the blaze preventing broader damage. The roof suffered extensive charring but insurance covers the loss.

Runaway Horse Makes Narrow Escape For Local Clergy

Rev W E Todd pastor of Eaglesville A B church and Dick Stuffel narrowly avoided serious injury when a horse frightened by a road scraper bolted. The buggy overturned near Tom Bester's gate. Todd suffered hip bruises while Stuffel was cut and scratched on face and head. They were treated at Tom Resler's home and driven home.

Steele Township Couple Weds in Plainsilo Home

Eli Joseph Day and Miss Csa Viola Raminer of Steele Township were married Sunday at the bride’s Plainsilo home with Rev. C. H. Buchanan officiating. Day, a young farmer, is son of Lewis Day and plans to farm two and a half miles west of Plainville with his bride, daughter of the late Wm. Raminer.

Madison farmer injured by attacking bull near Odon

Fred Shaffer a well known Madison area farmer living a mile north of Odon was seriously injured Saturday while driving cattle from a bull confined in a jet. The enraged animal charged him tossing him against a barn and a bark fence. He sustained multiple bruises several cracked ribs and internal injuries. Dr DeMoatte treated him and he is slowly improving.

Ward Reunion Observes Christmas With Family Gathering

The Leon ard Ward family celebrated Christmas with children and grandchildren returning home. A single Christmas dinner followed by talks and music given by the younger generation. All children and most grandchildren attended, except the West family in Missouri and Colorado. guests included Rev Garriott and family, Maggie York and Prudence Hannah.

Wedded: Edna McCarter and Ora Richardson Wed on Christmas Day

Miss Edna Opha McCarter became the wife of Ora E. Richardson in a Christmas Day ceremony at the bride’s parents’ home four miles east of Odon. The couple, attended by Grace Keitchem and Vernon Kinder, were married by Rev. Isom Beasley before about sixty five relatives and friends. Dinner followed and the couple will reside on a farm near Scotland after January.

Elnora Poultry Show Set With Record Entries

Preparations are complete for Elnora's four day Poultry Show with a packed showroom and strong entries. Secretary Hackler reports high demand for shipping tags and the premium list draws fanciers from across the state. After Judge Lane's death a top American Poultry Association judge will be sent and silver cups on display in Elusra draw attention.

Death of Mary E. Eddy in Chanute Kansas

Mary E. Eddy born in Ohio died at her Chanute home last Saturday at seven. She moved to Daviess County in 1859 and to Kansas in 1870 with her Civil War veteran husband dying three years ago. Survived by four children Bert Eddy Jessie Eddy Grant McCowan and Pesri Gahham. Sister of G D Abraham of this city. Abraham family’s last representative of that generation. She was well known locally.

County Auditor Lew S. Core issues a call for the county council to convene at the court house on December 30 and 31 to discuss and approve appropriations to reimburse two funds.

Christmas Day Merriment In Town With Santa Visits

Christmas day brought quiet town cheer as families returned home to celebrate. Merchants enjoyed strong holiday trade and shoppers bought belated gifts while Santa Claus visited many households.

Masquerade Party Hosted by Mr and Mrs Roy Myers

A pleasant masquerade party was given at their home on South Spring Street on Christmas night by Mr and Mrs Roy Myers. About forty guests attended and the prize for identifying the greatest number of masked persons was tied between Ralph Gantz and Miss Mabel Chinn. The evening concluded with games contests and refreshments.

Census of males above 21 in Indiana townships begins

Beginning January 1 the township trustees must take an enumeration of all males over 21 years. Forms and instructions for the work are being sent out from the state.

Washington editor Stephen Belding dies at home

Col Stephen Belding longtime editor of the Washington Democrat died at his Washington home Saturday night at nine o'clock from apoplexy. He was over sixty one and left a son in Indianapolis. Belding began printing as a boy, studied at Indiana University, bought the Martin County Herald in 1861, worked for Evansville Journal and Cincinnati Commercial, then returned to found the Washington Democrat. He served as president of the Washington Geographical Union and was famed as a top editorial writer in the state.

Oscar Keter of near Lyons married Miss Dessie Skomp on Tuesday at Newberry. Keter is a well known Greene county farmer. Dessie Skomp is the only daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Skomp of Newberry. The couple will reside in Newberry for now.

Marco Dominates Odon In High School Basketball

Marco boys outpaced Odon with speed and ball handling and rarely missed. The visitors controlled the game from start to finish, opening a wide lead. Final score 43 to 6.

Big Gun Match Draws shooters from across counties

A large turnout attended a Monday big gun watch at the Odeon Goon Club. Shooters traveled from Bedford Indian Springs Williams Sums City and Elnora with local marksmen also present. The weather was wet and hindered scores though turkeys were pursued as the match began around nine in the morning and lasted while light permitted.

Mrs HiramsicKee known as Crenduma Melee dies at her daughter Mrs M J Heck in Elnora. Survived by three children including Beever Beek and Margaret Pedan. Funeral from residence Tuesday at 9 AM with Rev H C Shaw officiating. Interment at Sanborn.

Olon Students Begin Annual Christmas Vacation

Olon school children start their winter break releasing from duties Tuesday and return Monday January 6. Two weeks off at Christmas each year with hopes for snow and winter weather. Teachers head to the State Teachers Association in Indianapolis the day after Christmas with many from Daviess county attending.

Indiana University Bulletin Expands Extension Work

Indiana University issued a bulletin outlining expanded extension work to reach those unable to attend in person. The plan mirrors Midwestern state universities and offers fourteen correspondence departments and sixteen lecture departments. Credit toward a degree is awarded after satisfactory completion and meeting admission requirements.
