Purdue Farmers Short Course 1908 at Lafayette

Purdue University in Lafayette Indiana hosts a six day Farmers Short Course January 13 to 18 1908. Program covers corn stockmanship dairying horticulture and home making with lectures demonstrations judging and practical scoring. Notable faculty includes C E Thorne J T W Duvel D O Barte J F Haines and E G Buonel among others with the Indiana Corn Growers Association event January 15 and a corn and fruit show by the Corn Growers Association and the Horticultural Society.

Fruit Show Premiums At Purdue For Farmers’ Short Course

Indiana fruit growers are urged to attend Purdue University during the Farmers Short Course January 13 to 18 1908 to compete for 200 in premiums offered by the State Horticultural Society. Monster Eagle Shot Near Vincennes Large Mascot Captured

President Heurace Elis of Vincennes University received a live American eagle from Dr J H Sperce of Norris City Illinois. The eagle measured 10 feet 10 inches wingspan and was shot by a hunter from Neurgis City. The bird attacked a sheep, crippling it in one wing, and will be chloroformed and mounted for the university museum. The eagle was shipped in a crater lined with mesh wire due to its viciousness.

Chaney Proposes Bank Tax to Protect Depositors

Representative John C Chaney introduces a bill requiring national banks to pay a yearly tax equal to one tenth of one percent of average annual deposits. Funds go to the U S treasury to protect depositors from bank failures theft or officer misconduct. If banks refuse to pay the tax the controller of the currency would close them.

Bull Pup Saves Elnora Man in Bedford Siding

Albert Lay of Elnora was found lying on a Monon sidetrack in Bedford by Officer Chas Moore. The dog Sport, a white bull pup, alerted the officer to the prostrate man who said he was assaulted and robbed of a gold watch and $10. Lay had been ill and faced exposure and possible death or trampling if not for the timely discovery.

Plainville Store Sold to Local Dairyman in Negotiated Deal

The J. F. Cox store at Plainville will change hands to William Fliles the dairyman southeast of the city. The sale will close in several months after stock is reduced to about six to seven thousand dollars. Cox, long a Plainville merchant, travels to Missouri seeking a new site and hints at real estate ventures with Eph Keith. Miles sells his dairy to George Gilliatt on the Portersville road. ownership transfers at year's start.

New Rules Worry Weekly Publishers Over Mailing Rates

Weekly newspaper publishers fear regulation changes from the postmaster general effective January 1. Credit extensions to readers will end as the law sets lapse periods before mail rate changes. After lapse, papers must use stamps at 1 cert per four ounces.
