Eight-Year School Graduates Announced by County Superintendent

County Superintendent Ben Burris lists eight year pupils scoring passing marks in the March 19 common school exam. Of 195 test takers, 66 failed to meet 85 percent. Highest score 94 by Garland Wadsworth with county honors. Diploma grants access to area high schools. Names from Madison Van Buren and Kane townships included with pass rates and top averages.

Washington real estate dealer John B. Slater dies at home

John B. Slater a Washington real estate dealer and insurance agent died unexpectedly from organic heart disease at his home Saturday morning. Born August 30, 1846 in Petersburg he was the son of Rev. Francis S. Slater a pioneer Baptist minister. He served in the Civil War with the Seventeenth Tuoluma volunteers and married Miss Mary Ferguson of Maryland. He leaves no children and was uncle to Mary Slater, known to many Olon residents.
