On the first ballot J D McNonnell and J Finley were elected with a scattering vote for several others. The resolutions endorse McKinley for second choice. Insurgents attacked Spaniards, who retreated after heavy losses. insurgent casualties were also reported though figures vary. Gouiez reportedly advances toward Sisuunes valley as a court martial in Matanzas sentences four prisoners to death.
The U.S. consulate in Amsterdam warned the public against pursuing unclaimed Dutch estates and the fictitious Bank of Holland. Edward Downes says these estates do not exist and unclaimed inheritances would escheat to the state after five years under 1552 Dutch statutes. Ambassador Bayard has issued similar cautions about unclaimed funds in England.
