Franklin gets two life terms for Utah killings

In Salt Lake City, Joseph Paul Franklin, 31, a self described racist, received two consecutive life terms after a jury found him guilty of first degree murder in the Aug 20 1980 shootings that killed Ted Fields and David Martin near a city park. He had already been sentenced in federal court for civil rights violations and faces more murder charges in other states. Banks ordered Utah terms to be served after federal terms, with no Utah minimum before parole. Franklin shouted obscenities at the judge and briefly escaped custody during the penalty hearing.
