A vintage aircraft circled downtown Nashville then clipped trees and crashed between two houses, bursting into flames near a crowded farmers market. Pilot Charles Richard S. and passenger Stephen Paul were killed as Fire Chief Buck Dozier noted the wing loss and crash into a vacant lot nearby. Police Sgt. Odessa native James Phillip Fouche Sr. recalls being shot six times during the 1944 Cassino assault in Italy and briefly buried in snow. Now 78, he revisited the village, receiving warm thanks from locals while recounting the monastery’s harsh occupation and the daring night assault by 48 Allied soldiers.
During the Cassino engagement, Nazi forces opened fire on a group of soldiers attempting to advance. The encounter highlighted the heavy resistance faced by Allied units in this sector.
