Hantavirus dangers and prevention in the region
CDC notes hantavirus can cause severe lung disease with a 38 percent mortality rate. Four US rodent species spread it, including the Deer Mouse and White-Footed Mouse, with three in the Permian Basin. Prevention focuses on sealing entry points, removing food sources, eliminating watering spots, traps, and careful cleanup after exposure using bleach and protective gear. Texas accounts for 34 of 602 US cases through June, 21 percent of regional cases, stressing practical avoidance steps.
